DiskFreeVault privacy policy

Your files stay on your Mac.

DiskFreeVault moves the files and folders you choose from your Mac’s internal disk to an external disk. This policy covers the app, in both the Mac App Store edition and the edition downloaded from this website, and the diskfreevault.com website.

  • 01

    The app collects nothing

No account, no sign-in, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting.

  • 02

    The app sends nothing

It makes no network connections. Your files, and their names and locations, stay on your Mac.

  • 03

    The website is separate

This site handles contact messages, orders and its own visit statistics. Each is described below.

The full policy

What is collected, and what is not.

The first five chapters describe the app. The rest describe this website, which is the only place DiskFreeVault handles personal data.

01

What this policy covers

DiskFreeVault is a Mac app that moves files and folders you choose from your Mac’s internal disk to an external disk. It is published in two editions: one on the Mac App Store and one downloaded from diskfreevault.com.

This policy covers both editions of the app and the diskfreevault.com website. The app does not collect any data. The website handles a small amount of personal data when you visit it, contact us, place an order, use the help assistant or allow analytics.

02

What the app does with your files

DiskFreeVault reads the names, sizes, dates and locations of files and folders in order to show you what is using space, and it copies and moves the items you select. It reads file contents to copy them and to check the copy afterwards. It also looks at the start of a file to tell whether it is a program, and the website edition inspects an app’s own description and code signature to judge whether that app can be moved safely.

  • Mac App Store edition. The app can see only the folders and disks you grant it through the standard macOS open panel. It cannot read anything else. This is enforced by Apple’s App Sandbox, not by the app.
  • Website edition. The app can read what your macOS user account can read, together with any further access you choose to give it in macOS System Settings.

Nothing about your files, including their names and locations, is sent anywhere.

03

What the app stores on your Mac

So that it can show a history of moves and undo them, the app keeps these records in its own Application Support folder on your Mac:

  • a record of completed moves, including the original and destination locations
  • a journal of moves in progress, so an interrupted move can be recovered
  • a list of items that need attention after a failed or interrupted move
  • which supporting folders belong to which app, as learned from earlier moves

It also stores your settings and, in the Mac App Store edition, the list of folders and disks you have granted, in the app’s preferences. The website edition stores your license key there as well, and checks it on your Mac without contacting a server.

These records stay on your Mac. They are not uploaded, synced or shared. Deleting the app’s data removes them: for the Mac App Store edition, delete ~/Library/Containers/com.diskfreevault.appstore; for the website edition, delete ~/Library/Application Support/DiskFreeVault and the app’s preferences.

04

What the app sends

Nothing. The app contains no networking code, and the Mac App Store edition is not permitted to open network connections at all.

Two actions leave the app, and both are started by you:

  • Choosing the website, support or privacy links in the Help menu opens that page in your web browser. The app passes the address to the browser and nothing else.
  • In the website edition, you can copy a diagnostics summary or save a support bundle to a location you choose. It is a file on your Mac. Nothing is sent unless you send it yourself, and the default version removes file paths.
05

Tracking and third parties in the app

The app collects no data, so there is none to share, sell or use for advertising. It does not track you across apps or websites and contains no third-party analytics or advertising code. In the App Store’s terms, the app’s privacy label is “Data Not Collected”.

06

Visiting the website

Like any website, the server that hosts diskfreevault.com receives your IP address, the page you asked for, and your browser’s description when you load a page, and may keep them in its logs for security and troubleshooting.

Visit counting. The site counts its visits with its own statistics, which run on our server and are not shared with an analytics company. Every visit is counted, to know how many people read the site and how they found it. If you have not allowed analytics, the count is anonymous: no cookie is set and nothing is stored in your browser, your IP address is kept only with its last part removed, and the visitor ID is a scrambled value that changes every day, so a visit cannot be linked to you or to your visits on other days. It records the page, the page you came from, your approximate country, your browser, operating system, device type and language, and how long the page was open.

Analytics. If you allow analytics in the Privacy settings panel, the site also records the links you select, your full IP address, your screen size and time zone, and uses two cookies to recognise your visits. Detailed visit records are deleted after seven days. Daily and weekly totals, which do not identify you, are kept for up to about a year.

Content loaded from elsewhere. The footer shows a directory badge that your browser loads from backlinklog.com, so that site receives your IP address and browser description. Some pages can show a partner placement; when one is displayed, your browser contacts the server that supplies it so the view can be counted.

Sign-in protection. Failed attempts to sign in to the site are counted by IP address for a short time so that repeated attempts can be blocked.

07

Contact form and help assistant

Contact form. When you send a message through the contact page, the site stores what you enter: your name, your email address, the topic, your message, any version and disk details you add, and any files you attach. It also stores your IP address. The message is emailed to us so we can reply. The check that the sender is a person is generated by this site and involves no outside service. Messages are kept for as long as they are needed to handle your request and to keep a record of it; you can ask us to delete yours.

Help assistant. The questions you type into the assistant are sent, with relevant passages from our published help, to OpenAI, which generates the answer. Do not include personal or confidential information in a question. Your IP address is used for about an hour to limit how many questions one visitor can send. If you ask for a person, the site stores the name, email address and optional phone number you give, the conversation, your IP address and your browser description, so that we can reply.

08

Orders and licenses

When you place an order, the site stores your name and email address, what you ordered, the amount, the payment method you chose, any note you add, and the license issued to you. Payment is made through the payment provider named at checkout, under that provider’s own privacy policy. The site does not store card numbers or bank account details.

The site keeps a record of each license: the name and email address it was issued to, its tier and expiry, and a fingerprint of the key rather than the key itself. Requests to the licensing service are logged with a scrambled form of the IP address, not the address itself. The app checks a license on your Mac and does not contact this service.

Order and license records are kept for as long as the license is valid and for as long afterwards as accounting and tax rules require. Order confirmations and license emails are sent to the address you give.

09

Cookies and browser storage

The site sets no cookies when you simply read a page. It uses these, each for one purpose:

  • Privacy choice. Your answer in the Privacy settings panel is kept in a cookie and in your browser’s storage for 180 days, so you are not asked on every page.
  • Analytics. Only if you allow analytics, two cookies tell one visit and one visitor from another: statone_session_token and statone_visitor_token.
  • Shop. Using the shop sets cookies that hold your cart and chosen currency for 30 days, and one that remembers the email address you used to unlock a download.
  • Help assistant. Your conversation with a support agent is kept in your browser’s storage so it survives a page reload.
  • Signing in. Signing in to an account sets the cookies that keep you signed in.

The site sets no advertising cookies. You can change your choice at any time with the Privacy settings link at the foot of every page.

10

Your choices and rights

You can use the app without giving us any information, and read this site without allowing analytics.

You can ask for a copy of the personal data this site holds about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, or object to how it is used, by writing to info@diskfreevault.com or using the contact page. Some order records must be kept for accounting reasons and cannot be deleted on request until that period ends. If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you also have the right to complain to your data protection authority.

We do not sell personal data.

11

Children and changes to this policy

The app does not collect personal information from anyone, including children. The website is not directed at children.

If this policy changes, the new version will be published on this page with a new effective date. A change to what the app collects would also be reflected in its App Store privacy label.

Privacy questions

Ask us about your data.

Write to us if you want to know what this site holds about you, or want it corrected or deleted. Questions about the app’s behavior are welcome too.
